“Joy is Separate from Circumstance”

This is a post I have been wanting to write for a while. With the holidays almost here, I thought it would be a good time to talk about it.

One day when I was teaching one of my classes, I had a student that was in a very good mood. He had a smile from ear to ear and his head bobbed up and down as if he was singing a song to himself. I taught the class and he kept on with this behavior. I became very curious as most of the people in these classes were court-ordered to be there and most of them were not nearly as happy to say the least. I asked the student how he was doing. He told me that he was still on probation for a D.U.I offense and he was having trouble finding a job. He was hoping the local Home Depot would hire him as the person in charge of collecting shopping carts in the parking lot. He was in a terrible financial situation and he just had a baby. The conversation looked a bit like this after that:

Me: “Well, it sounds like you have a lot on your plate. You seem very happy, though.”

Student: “You have to be happy. I have other friends who are going through what I am going through. They stay at home miserable about their lives. Its such a waste.”

Me: “That is a great way to be. How do you do that?”

Student: “Well, in my opinion, joy is separate from circumstance. You really have the power to choose to be happy no matter what.”

It is so amazing sometimes who you learn from. I really felt like I was the student at that moment as his words really gave me something to think about. Here was a guy who had so much against him. He was struggling financially and had the weight of the world on his shoulders. Despite this, he chose to be happy. He chose to be happy despite the “circumstances.” This is something that has been mulling in my mind ever since. Please remember this holiday season that there is so much in your life than just what may be keeping you down. Find joy in your loved ones and have a very merry holiday no matter what you celebrate. Also remember that the bullsh*t in life is temporary and that you can choose to be happy no matter what.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

I will be taking a short much needed break. I will be back refreshed and ready to blog  in the new year.
