Are We Enabling Bad Behavior?

I was catching up on some blog reading lately. I came across a blog where the blog owner was talking about purchasing something that I considered to be a little ostentatious. The blog owner is in a lot of debt but she felt that buying this item would be really great. It would also mean her getting into even more debt than what she had. The funny thing was her blog readers were openly applauding her for her decision. It made me think a little bit. Are we openly supporting bad decision making?

I love the PF community. Many people here are some of the most supportive and wonderful people you can ever hope to meet. Heaven knows that they have supported me through some tough times especially when it comes to paying down debt. Sometimes I wonder if in being very supportive, that we are also helping to enable bad behavior?

Is it possible to support someone even if we do not agree with what they do? Absolutely! I think it depends a lot on the person and the blog. In a way, its kind of a compliment that the readers of a blog are supportive even when the author could possibly be making a mistake. No one wants to be told that they are doing something wrong. The same can be said with other blog authors. I know I hate being told this as well. I guess the jury is still out on whether its good to mention when someone is doing something wrong or not. Perhaps its best to let them find out on their own?

I have seen the opposite happen as well.  I have seen blog owners torn apart by by well-meaning readers over little things. I have even seen one case where the blog author has stopped writing because of heavy criticism. It made me sad to see that. I guess too much of something can be damaging as well.

Its best to be supportive but  sometimes I wonder if it is damaging to the author as well. What do you think?
