Are Women Taking Control of their Finances?

I have found myself spending an uncomfortable amount of time reading financial articles on major news sites. I have been feeling that I have been getting a little obsessed. I can’t help it. I just love reading about finances and how the current economy is impacting this country. I think its interesting especially when the topic is related to women and their finances. It seems that many women are not  prioritizing their money as much as men. This is causing them to be painfully underfunded for the future. Does this sound familiar?

I personally do not understand why some women choose to be in the dark about these things. I realize not everyone is a geek (like me) and likes to read pages of economic news like me but come on! This is your livelihood. This is what puts food on the table and a roof over your head. I don’t want to come down on anyone, but ignorance is certainly not bliss in this situation. The truth is that you are the only one who can take care of yourself at the end of the day. I have met women who have been proud to say that they don’t know how to balance their checkbook or know hot to pay a bill.  I’m like:

WHAT?!?
Wow, life is going to be real fun for you. Good luck with that! I personally wish that money management classes were taught in public school. Do we really need a class about how to stitch a teddy bear together or one on how to plot lines on a bar graph (both useless things I learned at school). Anyway, thats a post for another day.
Ladies, please get educated about your finances. Don’t leave it up to your partner or whoever else.  I have heard so many stories of people leaving their wives and girlfriends with nothing and then the wives/girlfriends have to go through crap to get back on their feet. Even worse is that a lot of these women have children. Stories like this motivate me even more to be responsible. I am lucky in the fact that I have a great partner who is also pretty frugal but you still need to be prepared. Learn how to schedule your monthly payments so you don’t have to pay late fees. Know what you have coming in and coming out every week. This will save you such a headache later on.
